The CIM motor has been mounted on the chassis, as well as the new drum. As we suspected, the CIM motor works much better than the Fischer-Price motor.

February 12: Rule of Thumb: Last Minute Change of Plans
We're designing a new prototype (23.5" long PVC pipe with "brushes" made from pneumatic tubing). After holding several discussions, we determined that the pneumatic tubing will perform better than the rubber brushes. We are also debating whether or not we should switch from the Fischer-Price motor to a Cim motor. The advantage of the CIM motor would be that it would run longer (and faster)than the Fischer-Price motor.

February 11: Driver
After holding tryouts, it was determined that Mina Min will be the driver this year.

February 8: Hopper Finished!
The Hopper consists of: 4 27.5 "-44.125" long .125" thick lexan pieces attached by 1"-1"-.125" aluminum angle. Madbot is now 4'11.5" tall.

February 5: Drum
The Fisher-Price Motor has been mounted on the chassis frame, the drum can now be tested.

February 2: Electronics
Electronics have now been mounted, we can now test driving.

January 24: Drivetrain
The drivetrain for the robot has been mounted. We have decided on a simple skid-steer design this year.

January 23: MadBot!
After a deep discussion, the name of the robot has been decided: MadBot! Named after the Mini-MadBots (our logo design), we hope that Madbot will win first place this year!

January 22: Electronics
The electronics board are finished! We are waiting to mount them unto the robot. Additional, the control board is also finished.

January 20: Bumpers
Bumpers have been made for the robot. We have decided to use wood screws to attach the bumpers this year. Because we are using the KitBot chassis, Only bumper mounts need to be added to the bumpers to attach them to the chassis.

January 19: Build Hours
Build hours for the shop have been posted. They can be viewed here.

January 17: Decisions on the Drum
The Drum will consist of of a two foot long PVC pipe with a 2" inner diameter, 2.5" outer diameter. The matting will be cut into 4" wide, 24" long strips. The mounts for the Drum have been welded onto the chassis. We plan to use a Fisher-Price motor to power the drum.

January 13: Drum Prototype
The Drum prototype has been constructed. It consists of wood and a 4.5 inch diameter PVC pipe. Different types of rubber matting were cut into 4" strips and mounted unto the PVC through rivets. The stand for the Drum consists of 12.5" high plywood with a 24" long plywood in the middle.

January 12: Chassis
Our chassis has been welded and is now ready to tampered with! We are currently in the process of making spacers for the wheels and attaching the gearboxes.

January 9: Chassis Design
We will be using the kit-bot chassis. Cutting of the metal has been started and the battery box has been built.

January 8: Regarding Kickoff
After contemplating for several days, the team has decided to act as a supporting robot. This year we have decided to use a defensive strategy in autonomous and in teleoperated mode. We will make it our goal to herd and place as many as the game balls into the fueling as possible.

January 3: Thoughts after Kickoff
We are very excited about the game this year. Lunacy seems to be our greatest challenge yet. We will meet on January 5th and the design will be decided by January 8th.

December 26: Regarding Kickoff
The NYC kickoff at Polytech University will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Live broadcast will be made available on NASA's FIRST website. Happy Holidays and see you all next year!

The two mounts for the two lower arms have been completed and welded to the robot. These mounts will support the two arms, which are controlled by pneumatics.

January 31st: Motors Completed for Upper Arm
Upper arms have been tested and are working as planned. Now we can fully dedicate our time to the lower arms that are controlled by pneumatics.

January 29th: Steering
We tested our Vex servos motors that control our Ackerman steering, however they were too weak. We are currently working on a new design. We are leaning towards a window motor design.

January 25th: Upper-Arm Completed
First and second stage of upper arm have been completed and mounted. We are working on the motors so we can finalize and test the upper-arm.

January 22nd: Electronics/Drive-Train completed
The electronics board is completed and has been mounted onto the chassis. We did not have enough space on the electronics board to fit everything, so another section has been added to the electronics board to give us space. Now that our wheels, electronics board and the battery holder are completed and are mounted on the robot, only the steering remains before the testing of the drive-train.

January 19th: Wheels Assembled and Mounted
Our wheels have arrived; we are using Andy Mark 6 Performance Wheels which provide us with a coefficient of friction. We drilled holes into the wheels and the threads and have also completed riveting the treads onto the wheels. The wheels are mounted to the chassis.

January 15th: Chassis Completed
Our chassis has been welded with help from our mentor, Jonathon Cook. Our chassis is made entirely of steel, unlike last year’s robot which consisted of aluminum. Our chassis is also a lot lighter than last year’s.

January 10th: Chassis Design/Steering Decided
Our chassis will be made entirely of steel and will be welded together. We want our robot to be well within limits dimension-wise. This will allow us to add on extra parts if needed. We also decided on Ackerman steering, which is similar to that of a car. Ackerman steering is beneficial to us because it allows us to turn without losing momentum. It can also make our robot pretty fast and sturdy.
